Description

Collection of cookery and medical receipts in various hands, 18th century. An amalgam of 18th-century fragments bound together in the 19th century. The volume is made up of three main elements: 1. ff. 3-13, a collection of mid 18th-century medical and cookery recipes, considerably faded by damp-stains; several recipes bear dates in the 1740s; 2. ff. 15-25, a mid 18th-century collection of cookery recipes; 3. ff. 31-72, a late 18th-century collection of cookery recipes. Authorities for the early recipes include `Lady Probyn' [?Elizabeth Probyn (d. 1749), wife of Sir Edmund Probyn (1678-1742), judge, of Newent, Gloucs.], `Lady Stapleton', `Dr Mead' [Richard Mead MD, 1673-1754], `Dr Hayes', and someone with the initials R P.
