About this work

Description

Paton's personal collection of fifty-nine reprinted papers concerning curare.

The file also contains two related pieces (to be found at the end of file part 3/3): 1. F C MacIntosh, "Pharmacological tests on trimethylaminoacetylcholine." Ts, dated 30 January, 1941. It bears the inscription: "Bill, with compliments! I missed the boat with this." 2. Newspaper cutting: O P Dinnick, obituary of Professor Guy Vourc'h (1919-1988), Anaesthesia News, 31 (February 1988), p.4. A reference to Vourc'h's MD thesis (Paris) on 'Derivatives of Methonium in Anaesthesia' is marked by Paton in pencil.

In Man and Mouse, Paton described the significance of curare to surgical practice: "Anaesthetics first dull and then remove consciousness, while both spontaneous movement (e.g. breathing and eye movements) and responses to stimuli are still present. Even with deeper anaesthesia, the response to the stimuli of abdominal surgery used to be a tightening of the muscles making the surgeon's exploration of the abdomen very difficult. Thus, for operations like that on the gall-bladder, requiring access deep under the lower ribs, it became necessary to give a lot more anaesthetic with corresponding dangers and after-effects. Curare allowed the muscles to be relaxed without having to give more anaesthetic, and the benefit in terms of access for the surgeon and of patient well-being amounted to a surgical revolution." (Paton, Man and Mouse: Animals in Medical Research, 2nd edn, Oxford, 1993, 203-4).

For the implications of the "curare-form effect" on the Cruelty to Animals Act (1876), see correspondence of the Research Defence Society for 1951-53 (E/1/5/1).

Each curare paper in the file collection bears an alpha-numerical reference (marked on the front page in ink, beginning with C). The papers comprise:
