The Friedländer catalogue of Poussin's drawings does not contain anything like the composition of the etching. As the imprint is so definite about the original design by N. Poussin done in Rome, there may have been a drawing so inscribed, perhaps in private possession, on which Hillemacher based his etching. His source may have been a pen and ink drawing of the same scene sold by Christie's, Old master drawings, London, 2 July 1991, lot 315, as by Michel Corneille (1642-1708)
