    PREFACE. The previous issue of this Pharmacopoeia having become obsolete, the^Mcdical Council of the London Hospital ap- pointed a Committee, composed of certain Members of the Medical and Surgical Staff, to prepare and issue a new edition. Upon proceeding to carry out the wishes of the Council, the Committee secured the assistance of Mr. T. H. Tustin, whose skill in Pharmacy and long connection with the Hospital qualified him in an especial manner to co-operate with advantage in the execution of the pro- posed work. The reputation won by the old Pharmacopoeia, after it had passed through the hands of the late He. Peeeiea, induced the Committee to prepare the present edition upon the same plan. It is therefore divided into three parts—The first includes the Materia Medica, the second the Special Formulae, and the third the Hietaries and Aliments. In executing the work upon this plan, the constant aim of tho Committee has been to make the Formula) as simple, efficient, and economical, as loyalty to the nati- onal code, and deference to the differing views of individual Members of the Staff, would permit. Whilst the Committee know that the Pharmacopoeia now issued has many defects, they hope and believe it has some merits. For much that is plainly good, credit must be given to Mr. Tustin ; for all that is faulty, the respon- sibility rests with the Committee.
