About this work

Description

Dr Bedford Pierce introduced formal training for Retreat nurses shortly after his appointment as Medical Superintendent in 1892. These papers outline the proposed syllabus and lectures for first year, second year and third year probationer nurses. The earliest papers here are from 1894, representing the introduction of the training. They have been amended and added to as training developed and syllabus and content were altered between the 1890s and 1900s. Lectures were delivered by Dr Pierce and his Assistant Medical Officers. Many of the papers are in the handwriting of Dr Pierce and his medical staff (many look like the handwriting of Dr Mackenzie). Sometimes names of Retreat patients are given, as suffering from particular examples of mental diseases. This is not a complete survival of papers. They are arranged by First Year Lectures, Second Year Lectures and Third Year Lectures.
