Biographical note

The earlier essay was written while the author was a pupil at Grove House, Tottenham [Cf. Godlee (Sir R. J.) Lord Lister. Oxford, 1924, p. 13]. This fragment is 'No. 2'. and at the end is signed 'To be continued. Joseph Lister'. The second work is headed 'First Prize' in pencil, and was probably written while Lister was at University College, London.
