Description

An open roadway with colonial buildings to the left: Siemssen & Co., the Comptoir d'Escompte de Paris and the Masonic Hall. In the foreground, the memorial to the 'Ever-Victorious Army' which suppressed the Taiping rebellion in 1860-1864. The memorial was carved in Hong Kong and erected in 1866. Also seen in Thomson's negative number 530

Notes

This is one of a collection of same-size contact prints made, in 1981, from John Thomson's original negatives. The glass negatives, made between 1868 and 1872, were purchased from Thomson by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1921 and are now in the Wellcome Institute Library
