About this work

Description

The United Irishmen had conspired with French revolutionaries in planning a French invasion of Ireland in 1796 and a revolutionary insurrection in Ireland. Gillray here represents the effects of introducing the practices of the French Revolution into Ireland

Five harpies representing the five members of the revolutionary Directoire fly off tearing apart a map of Ireland: three of them are named on the print as Barras (Philipppe Barras), Le Paux (Louis Marie de La Révellière-Lépeaux), and Tallien (Jean-Lambert Tallien, a revolutionary but not a member of the Directoire)
