Notes

The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "They are sitting on a bench in a garden setting. Circa 1905 -1910. The bride is beautifully dressed and coiffed, the lace robe and headdress trimmed with orange blossom. All perfectly observed detail; but she has a moustache. She gazes lovingly at her husband. The card has a printed play title "Un beau mariage" and signature "L. Jaccoud" to front. The performers seem to be acting in the play Un beau mariage: comédie en quatre actes en prose by Emile Augier and Edouard Poussier (1859). The French message on the verso implies that Jaccoud is the actor in drag: he comments on the aptness of orange blossom as the symbol of ingenuité (innocence) and on his expression. A curious and perplexing image."
This work is untitled: the title has been supplied by the cataloguer.
