Description
Dupuytren, professor of surgery and Chirurgien du Roi, devised new instrumentation and operations, notably for Dupuytren's contraction, in which the fingers fold spontaneously over the palm of the hand, a disability suffered at one stage by Margaret Thatcher, among others

Sollier, described in the inscription as "Mouleur", might be Joseph Noël Eleazar Sollier d'Apt, b. 1810, described by Bénézit as a sculptor and a pupil of David d'Angers

Another bronze version of this bust is in the Académie de Médecine, Paris (L. Delhoume, Dupuytren, Paris 1935, p. 489, repr. p. 457) and a terracotta is in the subject's home town of Pierrebuffière. A plaster version was exhibited at the 1836 Salon, no. 1905 (information supplied by Joanna Barnes, 1993)
