Description

Erin (left) and Britannia (right) watch an armed combat between Parnell and "Walters", while Day (wearing barrister's wig), Smith and Hannen (both wearing judge's wigs) stand in the centre. Walters may refer to John Walter, proprietor of The times, in which forged letters damaging to Parnell had been published in March 1887. The judges James Hannen, John Charles Day, and Archibald Levin Smith formed the Special Commission set up to report on the matter
