About this work

Description

Herbaceous climbing plant, having coarse-toothed leaves and 'hop' flower heads. The cone-like flowers are traditionally used in beer brewing for their distinctive, bitter flavour. The young shoots have also been eaten as a vegetable, rather like asparagus. Extracts containing lupulin have also been used as a galactagogue (to increase the flow of milk in nursing mothers).
