With this is a printed leaflet: Information and Suggestions for the Friends of Patients (1847). Includes instructions about the removal of patients to the Retreat, and information about payments, clothing, reports on patients, and letters and visits. Contains form sent to friends/relatives when admission agreed, outlining what information should be sent with patient. Papers in the early to mid-1840s include pencilled comments on the forms (some have been rubbed out). It looks as though these comments were added by the Retreat doctor after admission. They either represent comments made at the time of examination of the patient, which were then transferred into the case book (and then rubbed out). Or, possibly, these are notes made by Dr John Thurnam when preparing his studies of mental illness at the Retreat, or else made by the doctor compiling the detailed Register of Cases (RET 6/2/2/1).
