Thus Astbury/^^, who was certainly one of the first to use the term widely, stated Molecular Biology is predominantly three-dimensional and structural. I myself, on the other hand, was forced tp caü myself a Molecular Biologist because when enquiring clergymen asked me what I did, I got tired of explaining that I was a mixture of crystallographer, bio- physicist, biochemist and geneticist, an# explanation which in T any case they found too hard to grasp. / lïie motives of people entering the subject were similarily mixed. Some were attracted because biological molecules are bigger and more complicated than other molecules, while other felt that Natural Selection is the main principle of biology and that it needs an explanation in molecular terms. .... — _=—— 1 ,W 7.
