About this work

Description

The second part in a series of two, this documentary looks behind the scenes at life in care homes for elderly people with demetia. Gerry Robinson investigates and attempts to offer suggestions to improve the often very sad state of dementia care homes. This part features Summer Vale, a care home in Leicester rated as poor. The situation there is shockingly bad with residents left in appalling conditions and no staff incentive to improve things. Care home assessment specialist David Sheard visits the home and suggests various improvements which will not cost more money. It becomes clear that the manager of the home, Judith, lacks enthusiasm to make the changes necessary and it is only when she leaves the home for a holiday that staff open up to Sheard and Robinson about what has really been happening in the home. Some serious allegations are made and the home is closed down. Sadly, the people who suffer most are the residents who face an uncertain future.
