Metcalfe discusses the manuscript of his work Caloric: Its mechanical, chemical and vital agencies in the phenomena of nature (published by Pickering in 1843) mentioning William Shearman (1767-1861), physician of Charing Cross Hospital, as a supporter of his theories concerning the elastic fluid "caloric" in the phenomena of heat
