Biographical note

The work is unsigned, but a contemporary note on the first leaf reads 'ces observations sont de M. le Chevalier d'Albert'. This was Charles-Antoine d'Albert du Chesne (or du Chaine), known as the Chevalier d'Albert, who was a captain in the French royal navy in 1731 and presumably served under Duguay-Trouin in the punitive expedition.

Ownership note

The top left-hand corner of the first leaf is inscribed 'No. 14'
