Material including personal and biographical material such as letters to his wife and family written during his service during and after World War One and appointments from various Monarchs to three Royal Orders, 1891-1919; records of his work with the Portland Hospital during the Boer War, 1899-1902; and correspondence about rebuilding of St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1900-1905.

Acquisition note

Given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in 1995 by Sir Anthony's daughter-in-law, Ursula Bowlby. Some additional material was found among family papers of John Bowlby received from his daughter Mary Gatling in 2001. Further material donated by Sir Anthony's Granddaughter in 2014.

Biographical note

Sir Anthony Bowlby (1855-1929), 1st Bt, was a surgeon; his distinctions include FRCS, CB, CMG, KCMG, KCVO, KCB.
