More than four years ago I became convinced, from observa- tion, that a revolution of the eyes, on their antero-posterior axes of rotation, occurs in all cases of oblique astigmatism, for the improvement of vision. This conviction led me to develop a theory of revolution which I made public, for the first time, in a paper entitled The Function of the Oblique Muscles in Certain Cases of Astigmatism, read before the Section of Ophthalmology of the American Medical Association, at its Chicago meeting in 1887.
