MS 4631 Smith, Abigail and others On pp. 149, 150 occur the words 'approved by me Abigail Smith' and elsewhere 'probatum A.S.' This MS. is therefore catalogued under SMITH (Abigail). On the first leaf, a 19th cent. owner has written 'Miss Dorothy Bate's Cookery and Receipt Book ... 1697-1763'. Though the name Dorothy Bate [or Pate] occurs in the MS. she does not seem to have been the compiler. As to the first date 1697, this is apparently taken from some leaf of the MS. now lost. The main text ends at p. 175, and is followed by receipts written by various hands of the first half of the 18th cent., one of the verso of the 5th unpaginated leaf is dated 1763.
