"NP": monogram indicating authorship of the design by Nicolas Poussin. "Alex. Voet" followed by indistinct letters ("EP"?): presumed to indicate the involvement of Alexander Voet. (Andresen, loc. cit., reads the name as "Alex. Vovet".) There were two engravers of that name. Alexander Voet II (1635-ca. 1695) is said to have been in Rome in 1661, but Pointel, to whom this print is dedicated, is said to have died in 1660: possibly one of these two dates is incorrect

After a painting by Nicolas Poussin which exists in at least two versions (a larger one in the Ringling Museum, Sarasota, Florida, 193 x 128 cm, and a smaller one in New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester, 97.5 x 73 cm), one of which may have belonged to the dedicatee of this print, Jean Pointel of Lyons
