Seated at a table, on which are a book and a skull, the subject wears the long flowing robes of a wizard or savant and holds a phial containing a red potion. Inscribed with name of Thomas Gale: on Gale see: E.L. Furdell, The royal doctors 1485-1714, Rochester, N.Y., 2001, pp. 85. He was Master of the Barber-Surgeons' Company in 1561 and serjeant-surgeon to Queen Elizabeth I
