About this work

Description

The first in a 6-part series about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This part looks at why CAM seems to be so popular at the moment. Is this because it is 'natural'? And does it reflect a growing disillusionment with medical science? We hear from many CAM practitioners from a housewife turned reflexologist, to osteopaths and homeopaths at a posh new alternative health centre, to the local chemist who sells aromatherapy oils. We sit in on two consultations for a patient with eczema - one 5 minutes long with a GP, the other a 45-minute session with a homeopath. The former ends with the patient being prescribed steroid creams, the latter with a tailor-made homeopathic remedy. The programme also includes the opinions of interested researchers both for and against CAM.
