Lima The English versions are corrected for syntax in another hand, probably for publication. Vol. I (ll. 2-11) is accompanied by an English translation in the same hand on the facing pages; only the English version of Vol.II remains after the introduction. Both vols. were published (with added tables and plates), by Velásquez and Maldonado, as Contribución al estudio de la materia médica peruana (3 fascs.), Lima, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Facultad de Medicina), c. 1921 (the MS Vol. I in fasc. I, pp. 83-84; Vol. II in fasc. II, pp. 85-133). Vol. II comprises a general introduction, the history of the use of Myroxylon peruiferum, the etymology of its indigenous name quina-quina &c., its geographical distribution, a botanical description, a detailed pharmacological study of this and related species, and a bibliography.

Biographical note

After heading the laboratories of Dr. Edmundo Escomel [1880-1959] in Arequipa 1906-15, Maldonado took his D.Sc. in the University of San Marcos and passed to a number of leading governmental and university appointments in pharmacy, the sciences, and archaeology. With H. Valdizán [1885-1929], Manuel A. Velásquez [1863-1923] and others, he published scientific and historical work on medicine, pharmacy, chemistry and archaeology in Peru; with his brother he founded the Laboratorios Maldonado (1923).
