Biographical note
Project Summary:Artist Alasdair Hopwood proposes to undertake a residency at the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit (APRU) at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Hopwood will create a new body of work that aims to increase public understanding about False Memory and current research into the manipulation of memory for medical purposes. The project will include a new website, a talks series and an exhibition that will examine the potential impact of these issues on Biomedical Science and Art, whilst stimulating a debate on the wider consequences of this area of scientific enquiry. Hopwood's co-applicant is Psychologist, Professor Christopher French who leads APRU and has written extensively about the role of False Memory in the reporting of anomalous experiences. In consultation, relevant contacts and collaborations will also be sought across the University of Landor and beyond, particularly with Professor James Ost (University of Portsmouth) and Professor Elizabeth Loftus (University of California, Irvine) who are also at the forefront of research in this area.
