About this work

Description

Yellow fever. Dec[ember]: 22: 1871 to 1873: May. Pernambuco (or Recife), Brazil. A list, probably taken from the Chaplaincy registers, of the name, age, residence, and year of death of those within the scope of the Chaplaincy who succumbed to the epidemic of 1871-73; prefaced by a commentary and rough analysis by age and residence. Of the 174 deaths listed only 9 were of residents of Pernambuco: the remainder were officers or crew of visiting ships. The 'Conclusions' suggest that the danger to residents of yellow fever is 'much exaggerated', that those under 30 are particularly at risk, and that young men in certain offices 'need to be specially careful not to give way to any kind of excess.'
