![Date of Application, 4th May, 1896~-Accepted, 6th June, 1896 COMPLETE SPECIFK^ATION. An Improved Inhaler. We, Arthur Matthews Paddox, of Westminster Chambers, 9 Victoria Street, in the City of Westminster, Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Christian Emmanuel Hedmondt, of 131 St. Mark’s Road, Notting Hill, in the County of Middlesex, Vocalist, and Henry Lemprieue Pringle, 5 of 56 Bartholomew Road, Camden Road, also in the County of Middlesex, Vocalist, do hereby declare the nature of this invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement :— The invention has for its object the production of an improved inhaler, more 10 particularly for the use of vocalists, but which will also be beneficial to others suffering from hoarseness, &c. In carrying our invention into effect we use a receptacle of any desired size and which may consist of a phial either of thin glass, preferably non-transparent, or of thin metal, in order to allow the contents being affected by the warmth of the hand 15 of the person using the inhaler. The orifice of the phial should not be less than one fourth of the maximum transverse sectional area of the phial itself, and it is preferably closed with a gas-tight ground glass hollow stopper luted with pure glycerine to keep a tight joint. The lower portion of the phial is to be filled to the extent of about three- 20 sevenths to one half of the entire capacity of the phial with manganese dioxide (MNO2) in a finely subdivided form or fine powder. This is to be hyper- saturated with the strongest solution of ammonia (NHg) till a small excess is observable. This excess is to be poured off and the saturated dioxide left in a solid and level form at the lower part of the phial. 25 A thin film or diaphragm of cotton wool or other equivalent material is then spread over its surface. Platinized pumice is then taken in quantity to fill the remaining space in the phial; this pumice is to be in granular form, preferably about the size of pearl barley, and it is supersaturated with chloric ether. The excess of chloric ether having been drained from the pumice, the latter is then 30 inserted in the phial over the ammoniated manganese dioxide and the phial is to be filled therewith to the neck. A small plug of cotton wool is then inserted in the phial to keep grit from the pumice away from the stopper. The phial is then closed with the stopper. The volatile ammonia, rising through the pumice, mixes and combines with the 35 fumes of chloric ether, and the mixed vapors are inhaled by the person using the inhaler, with the result of removing hoarseness and generally clearing the voice. For medicinal purposes eucalyptus oil may be substituted for the chloric ether to an extent not exceeding one filth of the chloric ether otherwise used ; the proportion of ammoniated manganese dioxide not being in any case reduced. 40 Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said inven¬ tion, and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what w'e claim is:— 1. The improved inhaler substantially as herein described. 2. In an inhaler, the combination in a phial, of a lower stratum or body of 45 ammoniated manganese dioxide and an upper stratum or body of granulated platinized pumice saturated with chloric ether, substantially as herein described.
