The portrait exemplifies the Corsican connection that linked Conneau to the Bonapartes. Henri Conneau was Conseiller départemental for the department of Corsica, where the family of his wife came from and where he died, while the artist Jean Baptiste Fortuné de Fournier was employed by Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III
