About this work

Description

There are nearly 12,000 centenarians living in London today. In this documentary, a large group of them speak to camera about their lives and the reasons why they believe they've lived so long. In 2011 Fauja Singh ran a marathon aged 100 and Nina Jackson, born in 1908, swims thirty lengths every morning at 8am. Hetty Bower, born 1905, we see her speaking at a CND event - she has been working as an active member of the Labour party since her teens. Harry Wylie was born in 1911 and he believes that it is important to keep an active mind - he was a headmaster by career who turned around many difficult schools in Glasgow. He is now Chair of his residents association. Peggy Hovell, born 1911, has always been closely involved in sports whilst Nora Hardwick, born 1905, ran the village post office for over fifty years and was thought of as the lifeline of her community. Ron Millington was born in 1910 and is an active golfer. All of the centenarians interviewed admit that keeping active, both in mind and body, is key to their long lives. Alice Herz-Sommer, born 1903, is the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust and is still an active concert pianist. Hetty and Alice meet each other. Lilian Lowe was born in 1907 and believes in moving with the times, she is probably one of the oldest Facebook users alive. The programme ends with the centenarians discussing their feelings about death.
