About this work

Description

The second episode of this 2-part documentary begins six months into the clinical trials of Dr. Steven Rosenberg's vaccine therapy for cancer. The vaccine does not work for everyone. A man suffering from melanoma helps Dr. Rosenberg to take his innovative treatment a step further: his lymphocytes are extracted to be vaccine-activated and returned, strengthened, to him. This approach is also the next form of attack in treating a 16-year old female patient whose tumours are increasing despite vaccine therapy; immune cells are collected from the tumours themselves and prepared for culture so that they can be strengthened and returned to her. The programme shows the difficulties involved in a pioneering treatment, the trust between patient and doctor and pays tribute to the tenacity of both parties in the face of setbacks.
