The baby business.

Since the birth of Louise Brown in 1978, 70,000 babies have been born through in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This is now a lucrative business but the Human Fertility and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is unable to ensure that clinics observe its requirements over treatment or that its inspectors' recommendations are carried out. There is, however, no independent inspection, the system being that fertility experts inspect each other's clinics. Panorama examines women's experiences of IVF and reveals abuses of the HFEA's rules and guidelines. The programme includes clips of the birth of Louise Brown (1978) and of Dr. Patrick Steptoe discussing the ethical problems he could foresee at this time.
