In one of the famous of all Roman legends, Horatius Cocles and two companions held the Sublician bridge against the invading army of Lars Porsenna until it could be demolished, whereupon he swam back to safety across the Tiber

In this print, however, Horatius is on horseback and fights alone, while his companions demolish the bridge
