Thirty-two children belonging to the District died under out' year of age, compared with 38 for the previous year, and of these our succumbed within 24 hours, three from congenital debility, and one from premature birth ; live died in the first week, three from premature birth, and two from congenital debility. Of the total, seven died from congenital debility, five' from premature birth, and four from diarrhoea and enteritis. The infantile mortality was 82.2 per 1,000, compared with 99.2 for the previous >ear. Between the ages of 1 and 5 there were 12 deaths, com¬ pared with 20 in the year 1913. Among the causes, two were due to tuberculous meningitis, two to pneumonia, two to diarrhoea and enteritis, two to accident, one to diphtheria, one to menin¬ gitis. and one to other tuberculous disease. Amongst all the children of school age. there were six deaths, and these were all males. The causes of death of these school children were diph¬ theria (2). nephritis, tuberculous meningitis, pneumonia, and hydrocephalus. When it is remembered that the District is one of the bleakest in Staffordshire, and that many oif the children have a long way to go to school, I think the small mortality in this class is highly gratifying.
