    In this scholarly survey of an engrossing subject the author has given more than a merely technical account of the history of anaesthetics. Beginning with a glance at the fundamental discoveries of oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc., she touches on the earliest experiments with ether and nitrous oxide, leading up to the work of Crawford W. Long and Horace Wells, and from thence to W. T. G. Morton and James Simpson. From this point the history proceeds, in fascinating detail, to carry on the story down to the twentieth century. Features of special interest are the reproduction of illustrations of apparatus, and the frequent citation of contem- porary records, original correspond- ence, etc. This admirable work is owed to the painstaking research of a member of the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics at Oxford, where so much has been done to extend knowledge of the principles and practice of anaes- thesia, and it is appropriate that the book should appear in the centenary year of the first important application.
