    ANNUAL REPORT OF THE OF VISITING JUSTICES, For the Year 1883. % ** * **+*\*r+* *Wf S *m t \4 *\*mlm**m* *V ^ THERE Las been a small decrease in the number of pauper patients from the County in the year just closed, the numbers having been:—at the commencement 425—195 males and 230 females ; at the end of the year 422—186 male and 236 females—total decrease 3. The number of admissions has been 54 of which 37 have been females. The discharges have been 25—9 males and 16 females, of these 24 were recovered and 1 relieved. The deaths have been 32—17 males, 15 females. The recoveries are 441 per cent, on the admissions, and the deaths between 6 and 7 per cent, on the average number of patients resident; in both respects a satisfactory average. The Out-County patients are 28—14 from the Town and County of Poole, 14 from Surrey. The Non-Paupers are 24—14 males and 10 females all from this County. The total number of patients in the two Asylums is 474. The health of the patients has been good, exceptionally so in the last half of the year. There have been some cases of scarlet fever in one of the cottages occupied by the servants and: their families ; but it has been confined to that locality. There: has been one suicide—a male patient employed in making the beds, who hung himself on a gas bracket when the attendant was out of the room. A male patient also escaped from thei premises, and wandering away to the railway, was unfortunatelyj killed by a passing train. The maintenance rate has remained at Is. 2d. a day during\ each of the four quarters of the year. In June last Mr. Gillespie, who had for eleven years dis¬ charged the duties of Medical Assistant at the principal Asylum with much efficiency, resigned, in the view of being married, and Mr. Macdonald, of the Cheshire County Asylum at Macclesfield, I was appointed to succeed him, -
