About this work
Description
'Autobiography' written by John Gardner which covers his family background, his birth on 28th July 1804, and his life up to October 1842. Gardner outlines his early life and briefly mentions his preliminary training with the surgeon of Coggeshall in Essex. He appears to have been largely self-taught and mentions the books and texts he used to instruct himself. A great deal of the notebook is given over to his Christian faith and the various Nonconformist sects that he was engaged with. He also comments on his own publication The Great Physician, which was published in 1843. The notebook ends at the moment when he appears to be suffering from debilitating depressive illness, his marriage is unhappy, and he considers emigrating to Ceylon.
The notebook is accompanied by a manuscript transcript (probably made by Dr Brewis's uncle) and typed transcript.
