Description

Edited footage of selected speeches and workshops at the IPPNW Seventh World Congress in Moscow, including voice over narration. Footage begins with a brief history of IPPNW, including key congresses and events. Includes interviews with co-founders Bernard Lown and Evgeni Chazov, as well as other doctors and delegates. Includes footage of delegates meeting Mikhail Gorbachev at the Congress. Includes footage of press conference after the Nobel award ceremony, Oslo 1985, where a journalist suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by Lown and Chazov. Includes footage of USSR hospitals and medical treatment in Russia; footage from Chernobyl disaster; footage of Soviet film, 'Letters from a Dead Man' (1986); footage of IPPNW appeal for peace, delivered at the 1945 Yalta Conference venue. Other notable footage includes filming a joint expedition of Soviet, Swiss and US mountaineers climbing Mount Elbrus, where a timecapsule was left with a message of peace from international physicians.

Discussions include peace campaigning, transnational collaboration, strategic defence and Star Wars, the SatelLife initative, Chernobyl disaster, medical activism, and related nuclear and peace concerns. Also includes footage of entertainment provided, including circus and orchestral performances, and cultural and historical tours provided for delegates.
