About this work

Description

Dr Kitching was Medical Superintendent of Retreat 1849-1874. His daughter was Elizabeth Shipp Kitching, born in 1845. She married Thomas William Carr on 16 August 1865. The photograph (these are two copies of the same photograph) shows the bride and groom and the large wedding party assembled at the front of the Retreat. The photograph may have been taken by William Pumphrey, the son in law of Thomas Allis (Retreat Superintendent 1823-1941): Pumphrey ran a photographic business in York for a time in the mid 19th century. Pumphrey was also at one time an attendant at the Retreat, and he was later the Superintendent of a private asylum, Lawrence House, Hull Road, York.
