    / CASE.” This is the title of an anonymous pamphlet issued by the Research Defence Society. The author, who hides his blushing face behind the cryptic legend, “Form C. 7,” addressing an audience assumed to be silly, exclaims:— “ Remember, that no operation, more than the lancing of a vein just under the skin, is allowed to be done on any animal in this country, unless the animal is under an anaesthetic all the time.” Possibly the audience will not be quite so silly as to forget that it is equally true that no one “ is allowed ” in this country to drive a motor-car over twenty miles an hour, and, having observed the precise similarity of these legal prohibitions, will deduce that they are probably equally disobeyed. If they make unbiassed enquiries they will immediately discover that “ the facts of the case ” are that there is nothing in English laboratories but the individual taste of the vivisectors to protect animals from the extremest torture, and the most foolish person must be aware that the habit of vivisecting animals is a slender basis for the assumption that a man has a tender heart.
