Five-part documentary series on some of the pioneers of modern surgery, combining archive footage, dramatic reconstructions, and interviews with surviving witnesses and participants. Part 5: End of an Era. Shows how initial euphoria over heart transplants and the prospects for developing an artificial heart has given way to more realistic, less naive assesments of the curative powers of surgery and the abilities of the surgeon during the last two decades.
