Biographical note

Leach, William Elford (1790-1836), naturalist, zoologist and marine biologist. Studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital,and at Edinburgh. M.D. Edinburgh, 1812. Assistant Librarian at the British Museum, 1813, and Assistant-Keeper of the Natural History Department there, 1821. Fellow of the Royal Society, 1817. Author of important works on crustacea.

Leahy, Albert W.D. (1855-1917).

Leake, William Martin (1777-1860), classical topographer and numismatist, grandson of Stephen Martin Leake. With his regiment in the West Indies, 1794-1798. Employed in instructing Turkish troops at Constantinople, 1799 and travelled in Asia Minor, 1800. Engaged in a general survey of Egypt, 1801-1802 and of European Turkey and Greece, 1804-1807. Chiefly known for the topographical researches set out in his Athens, 1821, Morea in 1830, and northern Greece, 1835.

Le Breton, W.C. (William Corbet), (fl. 1854), reverend. Dean of Jersey. Father of actress Lillie Langtry.

Lee, Francis (1661-1719), miscellaneous writer and physician, entered St. John's College, Oxford in 1679, gained B.A., 1683 and M.A., 1687. Studied medicine at Leiden in 1692 and became a Medical Doctor. In 1694 he became a disciple of the mystic Jane Lead, and in 1697 was one of the founders of the Philadelphian Society, although he distanced himself from this later. In 1708, he became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians.

Lee, Henry (1817-1898). Surgeon. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Worked at St. George's Hospital and King's College Hospital.

Lee, Henry (1826-1888). Naturalist to the Brighton Aquarium, 1872, and wrote a popular account of the octopus in 1874.

Lee, John (1779-1859). Principal of Edinburgh University. Medical Doctor, 1801. Licensed as a preacher in 1807, and became professor of church history at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews, 1812-1821. In 1821 he became Minister of the Canongate Church in Edinburgh, and gained a Doctor of Divinity at St. Andrews. In 1830 he became Chaplain in Ordinary to the King, and was Principal of Edinburgh University, 1840-1859.

Lee, John (1783-1866), collector of antiquities, man of science and astronomer. Son of John Fiott, he assumed the name Lee by royal license in 1815. Became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1824 and its president, 1861-1863. In 1828, he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1831. Lee was one of the founders of the Royal Meteorological Society in 1850, becoming its president from 1855-1857. He was a practising member of the ecclesiastical courts until 1858, and Queen's Counsel in 1864.

Lee, Robert (1793-1877), obstetrician. Became a Medical Doctor at Edinburgh University, 1814. He was physician to Prince Woronzow, Governor-General of the Crimea, 1824-1826, and in 1830 became a Fellow of the Royal Society. From 1835-1866 he was a lecturer on midwifery and diseases of women at St. George's Hospital, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1841.

Leeson, Henry Beaumont (1803-1872), physician and chemist - Graduated as a Medical Doctor at Oxford University in 1840, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He was a physician and lecturer on chemistry and forensic medicine at St. Thomas's Hospital, 1840-1852, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1849. He also belonged to the Cambridge Philosophical Society, the Chemical Society and the Royal Institution.

Leighton, Thomas, n.d.

Leighton, William Allport (1805-1889), botanist. Educated at St. John's College, Cambridge and graduated with a B.A. in 1833. Published Flora of Shropshire in 1841, and other works including Lichen Flora of Great Britain in 1871.

Leishman, Sir William Boog (1865-1926), bacteriologist. He gained a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.) and Master of Surgery (C.M.) from Glasgow University, and entered the Army Medical Service in 1887. He was famous for his work on anti-typhoid inoculation and kala-azar. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1910.

Lemprière, William (d. 1834), traveller and medical writer. Entered the Army Medical Service and by 1789 was working at the army garrison in Gibraltar. In this year he went to Morocco where he attended the Emperor's son, and women of the harem. During the 1790s he was army surgeon in Jamaica.

Le Neve, Peter (1661-1729), herald and Norfolk antiquary. Educated at the Merchant Taylor's School from 1673. He was president of the the Antiquarian Society, 1687-1724, and appointed Rouge Croix pursuivant in 1690. In 1704 he was appointed Richmond herald and Norroy king of arms, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1712.

Leslie, Henry (1822-1896), composer and conductor.
