    PREFACE. [HIS book is not intended to take the place of a text-book. Nor does it pretend to fill that of the teacher, or to enable students to prepare for examination without the practical work which is indispensable in this subject. It is what its name implies—a note-book. The Author has attempted to deal briefly with such points in the Syllabus as, in his experi- ence, are likely to present difficulty to the student. In dealing with the Syllabus in Part I., some attempt has been made to group its various parts in something like logical order. Hence, the order of the book differs from that of the Syllabus. In certain cases subjects have been omitted from Part I. as being more suitably treated under Part II. J. H. N.
