About this work

Description

Extensive treatise on the treatment of fevers and other illnesses, apparently prepared by, or on behalf of, a doctor in the French island colonies of the Indian Ocean. The emphasis of the volume is on tropical diseases such as malerial fevers. The owner or author identifies himself as 'Vincent' and adds 'Au Zindes' the latter probably being a corruption of Aux Indes. This is consistent with the unusual spelling found throughout the document e.g. "vaines" instead of "veines" and "pernissieuse" instead of "pernicieuse".

The first part of the volume covers the causes, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of a number of fevers, including la fièvre putride, la fièvre maligne, la fièvre ardente, la fièvre continué simple, and la fièvre fierce. It also includes a section on scurvy and one on rheumatism.

The second part consists of two pages of observations on a case of unexpected emphysema leading to an aortic aneurysm.

The third section contains two alphabetical sequences of headings under which are described a series of conditions. The first sequence gives advice and instructions on treatment, and the second gives traditional and Hippocratic aphorisms.

The final section of the manuscript details a course of treatment for syphilis prescribed by "L'affécteur" (presumably copied from the printed pamphlet Instruction pratique pour l'administration du Rob anti-syphilitique de Laffecteur, written by Pierre Boyveau-Laffecteur, first published in Paris in 1779).
