About this work

Description

Initially, without access to a camera, Atkin documented her skin and body on whatever means necessary. Created using a flatbed document scanner, this image series explores the conflict between the portrait and the anti-portrait and the transformative possibilities of the face and skin. Over a year, more than 1200 anti self-portraits were generated through a deliberately repetitive and compulsive physical process using materials such as clay, milk, soil, hair, wine, ink and acrylic paint. Each image is the result of a unique 15 second performance against the glass.
