About this work

Description

Second in a three-part series about some of the life and death decisions that have to be faced by doctors and patients. This part follows the dilemmas faced by parents of children with facial deformities which could potentially be improved by surgery. 4-year-old Ellisa has a facial haemangioma which would more than likely improve by the time she was in her teens and she is beginning to show signs of upset at other children's comments about her face. 4-year-old William was born with Crusams Syndrome [?], a rare condition that stunts his facial growth, leaving him not only looking very different but also affecting his breathing, eating and talking. 14-year-old Amit suffers from neurofibromatosis which leaves hlalf of his face distorted by heavy growths - surgery would improve both his quality of life and possibly prevent his condition worsening. Each of these children undergo surgery in the course of this programme. We see more or less detailed footage of the operations and in the case of William in particular we follow his recovery progress. Despite being somewhat harrowing viewing, the children all come out the better for their ordeals.
