About this work

Description

This film takes a wide-ranging view of food production and consumption in Britain and the U.S. Succinct commentary takes the action through three phases - "Food - As It Was", "Food - As It Is" and "Food - As It Might Be". The first section explains how pre-World War II profiteering and neglect of the agricultural economy caused poverty, resulting in the diseases of malnutrition. Next, Britain's World War II food rationing system is explained, with a very interesting range of film clips, showing how it was designed to ensure that everyone was adequately nourished regardless of individual prosperity. But what will happen when peace is restored? The film looks back to Europe's profiteering and starvation following the First World War and makes an urgent case for plans to restore the food supply in countries currently under Nazi occupation. Peace must bring a better standard of living to all - there can be no privileged people in post-war Europe.
