Biographical note

Geologist educated at Edinburgh University; joined Scottish branch of Geological Survey, 1855; director in Scotland, 1867; director general for Great Britain, 1882: retired, 1901; Murchinson professor of geology and mineralogy, Edinburgh from 1871-1981. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865. Knighted in 1891.
