    During 1966 there were 20 deaths of infants under one year of age, which gives an infant mortality rate of 28-2 per 1,000 live births, as compared with 20-8 in 1965. The average rate for the five years 1961/65 was 21-1, and the rate for England and Wales was 19-0. The neo-natal deaths, i.e. the number of deaths occuring in the first month of life, were 18, giving a neo-natal mortality of 25-4 per 1,000 live births, as against 13-4 for 1965. DEATHS (See Tables I to IV) The number of deaths at all ages during the year was 521, compared with 485 in 1965. The crude death rate was 12-7 per 1,000 of the population compared with 11-8 in 1965. If the death- rate for the District is to be fairly compared with that which obtains in neighbouring districts it should be multiplied by the Registrar General’s “ comparability factor (1-15 for Swinton and Pendlebury in 1966) to give the “ adjusted ” death rate of 14-6 per 1,000 population. This factor takes into account the differing age structure of the populations in different districts and, in respect of the year 1958 and subsequent years, the presence in any district of a chronic sick hospital (which would otherwise weight unfavourably the death rate for that district). Deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis numbered two and non-pulmonary tuberculosis one. Deaths from pneumonia and bronchitis totalled 42. Deaths from cancer of the lungs and bronchus were 22, against 23 in 1965, and from all forms of malignant disease were 109 against 96 in 1965. Twenty-nine deaths occurred in infants or children under the age of 15 years; 340 occurred in persons aged 65 or over. Accidental deaths totalled 19, compared with 13, 10, 14, 15, and 9 in the previous five years. Nine of these deaths in 1966 were due to motor vehicles and 10 to other causes. 8
