    A table on page 13 gives particulars of the population in previous years and it will be seen that the population is still about 2,000 less than the pre-war figure. MARRIAGES 890 persons were married during the year. This was 88 more than last year and gives a marriage rate of 17.3 per 1,000 population as against the national figure of 15.1 BIRTHS LIVE BIRTHS. The number of births registered during the year was 704 (357 males and 347 females) which was 42 less than in 1957. The total resulted in a crude live rate of 13.70 per 1,000 population and an ad- justed rate of 13.97 which was 0.80 less than in 1957. The provisional national rate was 16.4 per 1,000 population. Of the 704 live births, 653 were legitimate and 51 illegitimate, and the percentage of illegitimate births to total live births was therefore 7.2. Last year it was 8.8. Expressed in relation to 1,000 live births the local rate was 72 and the national rate 49. The table on page 13 shows variations in the live birth rate in previous years. STILLBIRTHS. There were 17 stillbirths (8 male and 9 female) registered during the year which was 1 more than last year. The rate per 1,000 total live and stillbirths was 23.5 and the national rate 21.6. One of the female stillbirths was illegitimate. MORTALITY The number of deaths attributable to the Borough after adjust- ment for inward and outward transfers was 660 (346 males and 314 females) which was 3 more than last year and gives a crude death rate of 12.84 per 1,000 population. When the Registrar-General’s area com- parability factor - a statistical calculation which allows for the difference between the sex and age distribution of a local population and that of the country as a whole-is applied the adjusted death rate was 11.55. The comparable national rate was 11.7. The table on page 14 shows the causes of death in age groups classified in accordance with the international categories adopted by the Registrar-General, and a table on page 12 gives the number of deaths for each sex and the percentage of deaths at various age groups during the year. Principal causes of death were again heart disease, cancer and vascular lesions of the nervous system. The number of deaths in each of these categories during the past two years, along with the rate per 1,000 population and the percentage of total deaths, is shown in the following table.
