Description

Shamanic healing is still practised and respected in Ladakh. The shaman sucks bile or small pieces of bone from the patient either through a rod or directly from the skin. This bile is thought to embody the diseased spirit. The shaman spits it out onto a pile of ashes

Tim Malyon worked with the Save the Children Fund, taking photographs in Ladakh in 1984. Ladakh is a remote mountainous area, situated between Kashmir and Tibet. Its inhabitants are mostly farmers, Tibetan Buddhists
